Eleven people suffered non-life threatening injuries when an AC Transit bus crashed into a Richmond home Friday night following a collision with a fleeing stolen vehicle.
A 3-month-old boy who was inside the severely damaged home in the 700 block of 18th Street came within inches of being struck by the bus, Richmond police Lt. Andre Hll said.
The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. when a Richmond police officer came upon a stolen maroon Honda. The cop had not turned on his vehicle’s lights or sirens when the driver of the stolen vehicle fled at high speed.
A few blocks later, the car ran a red light and crashed into an AC Transit bus at 18th Street and Burbeck Avenue, causing the bus to smash into a home, Hill said. A woman and her two young daughters inside the home suffered minor injuries and eight bus passengers were also taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
A juvenile passenger of the stolen vehicle was taken into custody, but police were searching for his older brother Richard Contreras, 24, of Richmond, who is the suspected driver. Contreras is on felony probation for multiple auto thefts and misdemeanor evading, Hill said.
