A burglary suspect became violent with a broomstick Sunday morning after residents of a Richmond home caught him trying to clean them out, police said.

Police were called about a burglary at the home in the 2100 block of Barrett Avenue about 7 a.m., police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said Monday.

After the home’s residents caught the 39-year-old man in the act, he attempted to flee by picking up a broomstick from a backyard and hitting the victims with it, Abetkov said.

But police responded to the scene quickly and the burglar, whose identity was not immediately released, was apprehended without further incident.

The residents who confronted the burglar suffered red marks from being struck by the broom, but no one was seriously injured, Abetkov said.
