Top sailors from around the world will gather at a Point Richmond yacht club next month for nine days of sailing canoe races and a shot at the second oldest international sailing trophy after the America’s Cup.
The Richmond Yacht Club is hosting the International 10 Square Meter Sailing Canoe Worlds Championship from Sept. 6 through Sept. 15.
Competitors will vie for the New York Challenge Cup, which was established in 1885 and is international sailing’s oldest after the America’s Cup (1851). The competition is held every three years around the world and currently the U.S. holds the coveted cup.
The sailors come from Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, and the U.S., organizers said.
They will not be using your typical canoe.
