Anyi Lu International, Inc., a popular high-end shoe designer whose products are sold in department stores such as Nordstrom, has established an office, design studio and warehouse in Artisan Cove in Richmond’s Marina neighborhood.

Richmond City Manager Bill Lindsay touted the company’s recent move in a Monday report about new companies that filed for business licenses with the city in July.

A spokesperson for Anyi Lu said the company combined its studio in Sausalito and warehouse in Richmond into one new business location at Artisan Cove on S. Marina Way.

“We chose Richmond because it’s a very central location for our employees,” the official said. “It is also a burgeoning business hub.”

The facility has eight employees who say they have been “enjoying exploring all of the new restaurants and the Bay Trail” and “absolutely love” their new workspace.

Designer Anyi Lu is a fascinating person. According to this recent Wall Street Journal article, Lu is a chemist who had worked at DuPont and Chevron before deciding she wanted to design fashionable shoes for women that are also comfortable.

“My male colleagues did not have to make a choice between professional footwear and comfort, and it bothered me for years that women did,” Lu told the newspaper.

She launched her shoe line in 2006 and it has apparently thrived. The company’s shoes are handmade in Italy and sold not only at Nordstrom but also at www.anyilu.com.

Anyi Lu International is one of 38 new businesses that filed for business licenses in Richmond in July, Lindsay said. Those businesses have combined for a total of 66 new jobs in the city, he added.
