Salesian alum Mariya Moore’s 7 points, 7 assists and 3 steals helped the USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team defeat Canada Sunday night to claim gold in the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

USA went undefeated with five straight wins at the tournament, topping Canada (3-2) 104-74 in the gold medal game. The top four finishers of the Americas tourney — USA, Canada, Argentina and Brazil — have qualified for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship in Russia.

The victory is more good news for Moore, who is set to play at the University of Louisville this fall following a stellar career at Salesian.

Moore’s name was dropped numerous times in this USA Basketball report about the gold medal game. Early in the game, Moore’s two free throws ignited a 12-0 USA run. USA went up 22-8 following a Moore assist, according to the report. Moore led the team in assists. The young woman with the no-quit attitude continues to prove herself following an unsuccessful effort to make the U16 team a few years ago.

Moore called the gold medal win “very special.”

“I actually didn’t realize how special it was until the beginning of this game when I looked up and looked at the Olympic rings and realized…that I was representing the United States,” she said. “Winning this gold medal is just so much. I don’t want to start crying, but it’s so special.”
