Richmond City Manger Bill Lindsay on Monday provided an update on an ongoing project to upgrade or install about 9,000 street lights with energy-efficient LED technology.

The project involves upgrading 7,000 street lights and installing 2,000 brand new lights citywide. The LED technology is far more energy efficient than the existing high-pressure sodium vapor lights. The lamps cast a wider, brighter light and provide better clarity at night, a city official said.

The chart below lets residents know the status of installations of the 2,000 brand new LEDs in their neighborhoods.  To date, 745 of the new street lights have been installed, and 321 of them have been energized by PG&E.

Lindsay estimates that all streetlight upgrades and installations will be completed by the end of this year, although he asked residents to be patient while the city awaits for PG&E to activate them.
