Because of Oprah, thousands of delicious croissants are being produced per hour in Richmond

As we all know, Oprah Winfrey simply has to say she likes something – even a little – for that something to become the most popular product in America.

In 2002, 2005 and 2010, for example, Oprah touted the croissants made by Richmond-based Galaxy Desserts on her Favorite Things list. Because of those mentions, the company’s croissant business has grown exponentially.

According this GrubStreet.com article: “The first time Oprah gave a shout-out to the croissants in 2002, master pastry chef Jean-Yves Charon says the company prepared to sell about 1,000 extra boxes, and ended up selling 15,000.”

To this day, Oprah’s shoutouts continue to have a booming effect for Galaxy Desserts, located at 1100 Marina Way South. In a Bakingbusiness.com article posted Wednesday, company officials reflected on the “Oprah effect.”

Following the 2002 mention, Galaxy president and CEO Paul Levitan told Bakingbusiness.com, “people called and called and called. At the time, we were making the best croissants around, but they were a side business. We went from hand-rolling the dough to buying seven sheeters. And now we have Line No. 23 in place that outputs croissants at the rate of thousands per hour.”
