Salesian alum Mariya Moore continues to receive national praise, this time in a glowing article from USA Basketball.

The story discusses how Moore, a McDonald’s All-American who will play for the University of Louisville this fall, failed two years ago to make the USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team but refused to give up. This year, she was invited to participate in the USA Women’s U18 National Team trials and subsequently earned a spot on the 12-member roster.

“Not making it definitely changed my outlook on things,” Moore stated in the article. “When I first came and paid my own way, I worked really hard to try to make the team, but I didn’t, and sometimes for me personally, that could bring me down.

She added, “It also just pushed me to work harder so that I would never again have that same feeling.”

She said training camp with the national team this summer has been both competitive and intense and appreciates being able to work with Louisville head basketball coach Jeff Walz, who is an assistant coach on the U18 team.

The USA team’s is headed to the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship on Aug. 6.
