The Richmond Police Department has been saying it for weeks on social media, and are continuing to ask residents to spread the word on the dangers of celebratory gunfire during Independence Day festivities.

Police have been spreading the hashtags #stopcelebratorygunfire, #whatgoesupcomesdown, and #notavictimlesscrime, along with a flyer warning that shooting guns into the air is not only dangerous but illegal.

According to a U.C. Davis study, the flyer states, 317 people were struck by celebratory gunfire nationwide between March 2008 and February 2009. Of those people, 20-percent reportedly died.
