Richmond family safe after neighbor accidentally fires off shotgun into their home

A Richmond family was luckily uninjured when a neighbor who was “playing around” with his loaded shotgun unintentionally fired a round into their apartment early Sunday, police said.

The incident was reported about 2:50 a.m. in the 100 block of 19th St., police spokesperson Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. A family with children were asleep and initially thought they heard an explosion before a hole was found in their wall, Abetkov said.

Responding police learned that the family’s neighbor, a 19-year-old man, had been “inside his apartment playing around with his loaded shotgun” when he accidentally fired a round through a wall shared by the neighboring apartment.

“Luckily no one was injured,” Abetkov said.

The suspect was booked on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm, and received an additional charge because the shotgun’s serial number was partly obliterated. The shotgun was seized by police as evidence, Abetkov said.
