La Perla Mexican Deli at Fourth Street and Nevin Avenue in Richmond is set to reopen under new ownership on Tuesday, according to the West County Times.

The restaurant is going to be somewhat different from the La Perla that was founded by the Ponce family in 1948. The beloved original La Perla closed in May after the family retired.

New owner Susan Weinberg-Matteson initially claimed La Perla was going to be “exactly the same” as the original version. The family disputed that claim, saying she wouldn’t have the family recipes, but wished the best for the new owner.

When the Richmond Standard spoke to the previous owners’ family back in May, we were told the new owner would be serving Jamaican food. Turns out that will be true.

Weinberg-Matteson told the West County Times that the new La Perla will be open for longer hours, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., serving “breakfast, lunch and dinner” that will include both Mexican and Jamaican food, and also healthy options for kids.

“Weinberg-Matteson said she will continue to offer the Mexican food that made the deli popular, adding coffee, juice, baked goods and other breakfast options in the morning and Jamaican cuisine during dinner hours,” the Times reported.
