It’s that time of year in Richmond where the music you hear in the distance is likely being played live.
The annual Music on the Main summer concerts, brought to us by the Richmond Main Street Initiative (RMSI), are scheduled for July 23 and Aug. 27. Both concerts will occur from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the lot next to the new BART parking garage on the corner of Marina Way and Macdonald Avenue.
The July 23 show includes blues, soul, and R&B diva Rhonda Benin, along with MZSwitchedUp, a group consisting of two sisters who exhibit their skills on various instruments while serving up R&B classics. Also taking the stage is 2morrows June, a group supported by the Richmond Police Activity League that performs some of today’s most popular music, such as hits by Maroon 5 and Adele.
The Aug. 27 concert will feature the sounds of the bayou courtesy of one of the Bay Area’s premiere homegrown bands: Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic.
“Thierry has captured the attention of audiences all over the world with his phenomenal accordion-playing skills and smooth vocals, which he will bring to his native Richmond at Music on the Main,” organizers said.
The concerts have been highlighting local talent for 13 years, blossoming from a “very small neighborhood event” into a “district celebration,” RMSI said.
Expect family-friendly activities at this year’s concert events, including Zumba fitness breaks, wine, artisan and food vendors, drawing prizes, and more.
Music on the Main is sponsored by the City of Richmond, Chevron, Mechanics Bank, SimsMetal, and Nutiva. Additional support for Music on the Main comes from the Downtown Richmond Property Based Business Improvement District.
