A woman accused of abducting her three children from their father’s San Pablo home, prompting a statewide Amber Alert Monday, has been arrested on suspicion of killing the father.

San Pablo police located Alicia Ortez, 35, and her three children ages 3, 6 and 12 at a home in the 400 block of S. Eighth Street in Richmond about 11:30 p.m. Monday.

About 15 hours earlier,  police were called to a home in the 1600 block of 16th Street in San Pablo after the children’s father was found dead on the property with at least one gunshot wound. The children lived with their father, and when they could not be located the Amber Alert was issued.

The children are now “in a safe place,” San Pablo Police Commander Jeff Palmieri said.

Police also arrested Ortez’s male companion in connection with the homicide. His identity has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing, Palmieri said.
