Artist Sara Malpass is a master list maker.
For nearly a half-decade, Malpass has been going to Richmond’s NIAD Art Center at 551 23rd St. in order to make lists. Sometimes she makes lists on texts she is reading at the time, or lists cataloged from books and magazines. Other times she lists her emotions, and notes her daily encounters with the world.
Her lists are often unconventional. Some, frankly, are indecipherable.
In any case, the lists are amazing and displayed in a way that harkens back to the graphic style of 1960s greeting cards and adverts. They can be viewed this summer along with the works of other exciting artists at the NIAD Art Center, the art program for people with developmental disabilities.
Malpass’ exhibit, What Are Words For, will be located in NIAD’s main gallery from July 11 through Aug. 22, the art center announced Thursday. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m., and admission is free.
During the same summer period, art aficionados can also view fiber artist Peggy Blei Hracho’s Eye Of The Needle exhibit in the gallery’s annex space. Also, the Art Center storefront will host the exhibit, Diamonds in the Rough, a lively overview of NIAD’s jewelry program. More information about these artists and their exhibits can be viewed here.
The opening reception is July 12 from 12:30-3:00 pm., but don’t expect your typical wine-and-cheese affair.
“We won’t be serving those stodgy art opening standards – wine and cheese – nor will the food trucks be in the courtyard,” NIAD officials said. “We’ll be having a free cookout with dogs and burgers and potato salad. So plan on hanging out with us.”
