A man was shot in the stomach during what police believe was an attempted robbery on Fifth Street in Richmond, Calif. Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The shooting was reported about 4:20 p.m. in the 500 block of Fifth Street, Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. A young man reportedly approached the victim, who was standing in the garage area of a residence,  when the two exchanged words. The young man fired off one round into the victim’s stomach, Abetkov said.

The victim was transported in critical condition to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

The suspect fled before police arrived and hasn’t been caught, police said.

Police are interviewing possible witnesses who may have been at the scene during or after the shooting, Abetkov said.
