Step aside, Google: This might be one of the coolest job openings you’ll hear about in the Bay Area.
The nonprofit East Brother Light Station, Inc., which is located atop an island on the strait that separates the San Francisco and San Pablo bays, is seeking a couple to take on the role as keepers for the 1847 lighthouse and five-room bed and breakfast.
After more than two years, current keepers Richard Foregger and Jude Haukom are set to leave their posts in September. The successful candidates will be a couple, one of whom must possess a Coast Guard commercial boat operator’s license.
The couple will operate the five-room inn, serving both dinner and breakfast, as well as providing ferry service for guests and all other tasks from chef to maid. High quality culinary experience and capability will be a critical qualification. The inn is open four days a week, and the island is also available for day use and special events. The new keepers will start in late September.
Compensation is a function of the level of business, occupancy level and the economy. In the last three years it has ranged from $80,000 to $100,000, trending upward, for the couple. The compensation includes a health plan and living quarters on the island.
Email completed application with proof of Coast Guard license to Tom Butt, East Brother Light Station, 117 Park Place, Richmond, CA 94801 at firstname.lastname@example.org. No phone calls, please. For any questions email email@example.com.
The lighthouse, owned by the U.S. Coast Guard but maintained for public use by the non-profit corporation, has operated as a bed and breakfast since 1979.
The income from operations is used by a group of volunteers to maintain the buildings, which are both a California State Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
