Vigilant neighbor leads Richmond police to burglary bust

A watchful neighbor was praised by Richmond police following the arrest of a suspected burglar in the 1500 block of Santa Clara Avenue Friday afternoon.

The incident unfolded around 2:45 p.m., when the neighbor watched as a man knocked on a door to a nearby home, police spokesperson Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. When the suspect got no answer, he went to the side of the house, opened a window and climbed in, Abetkov said.

Officers responded quickly and established a perimeter.

“As they were doing so the suspect attempted to flee out the front door,” Abetkov said. “Once he saw the officers, he slammed the door and locked it, retreating back into the house.”

Police then sent a police dog into the home. The pooch made contact with the suspect and he was arrested, Abetkov said.

The suspect, a 41-year-old transient who hasn’t been identified, was reportedly taken to to the hospital for medical clearance before being booked into County Jail for burglary and possession of stolen property.
