The Shields-Reid Community Center baseball field might soon undergo a significant renovation.

A proposed $1.7 million renovation of the sports fields at the Shields-Reid Community Center in Richmond is a city council vote away from becoming a reality.

The project, funded through several grants, including one from East Bay Regional Park District, would add a new backstop, dugouts and bleachers to the community center’s baseball field at 1410 Kelsey St., said Public Works Director Yader Bermudez.

The adjacent multi-use field would also see improvements with the installation of play equipment, picnic facilities, a prefabricated restroom and fences. Associated drainage improvements, landscaping and asphalt and concrete pathways are reportedly included in the $1.68 million cost.

Last week, the city’s Finance Committee awarded the construction contract to Richmond-based W.R. Forde Associates. The project now heads for City Council approval on June 17, Bermudez said.

The purpose of the renovations is to expand the fields’ usage by the community and improve their inherent safety, Bermudez said.
