A burglary suspect’s attempt to outrun Richmond cops by hopping the backyard fences of Iron Triangle homes ultimately failed on Sunday, police said.

The incident unfolded about 4 p.m. in the 600 block of 3rd St., when a police officer spotted a suspect walking by who he knew had an outstanding $35,000 burglary warrant, police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

The suspect, a 25-year-old Richmond man, gave the officer a false name, but the cop didn’t fall for it.

“He remembered the suspect’s last name,” Abekov said.

After the officer confirmed the suspect’s identity and began questioning him, he fled on foot. He reportedly ran into the backyards of nearby homes, hopping fences, and attempted to flee a police perimeter that was set up to surround him.

“He tried breaking the perimeter but was caught and arrested,” Abektov said.
