Richmond police to hold another DUI checkpoint at Cutting/41st on Friday night

An enforcement operation in Richmond targeting drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks led to 52 citations Wednesday, police said.

RPD’s traffic unit uses pedestrian decoys at various city locations as part of the operation, police spokesperson Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

The unit has been doing such operations several times a year in response to a rash of vehicle-pedestrian accidents in Richmond. Some had been fatal, Abetkov said.

Some drivers might have been shocked to be cited. Not all motorists realize they are prohibited to proceed into an intersection until a pedestrian makes it all the way across the street, no matter what side of the intersection the driver is coming from, Abetkov said.

Richmond residents seemed to support the operation on the Richmond Police Department’s Facebook page:
