Richmond police responded to four significant vehicular accidents in just over two hours Monday night, including a crash that led to a street brawl.
“Obviously our traffic unit was depleted,” police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
The first crash was reported about 6:30 p.m. on Richmond Parkway near West Macdonald Avenue, Abetkov said. Three people ended up trapped in an overturned vehicle that had collided with another vehicle. The Richmond Fire Department responded and removed three people from the crumpled car. Their injuries were not life threatening, Abetkov said. One of the drivers was subsequently arrested for DUI.
About 10 minutes later, police were called to the 3700 block of Cutting Boulevard where a brawl broke out following an accident. One of the combatants “decided to flee the scene,” Abetkov said, but was caught and arrested on suspicion of hit and run. Another person was arrested on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon for using a bat during the fight. Identities of the suspects were not immediately available.
While that was a wild incident, the traffic cops were far from done for the night. At 8:40 p.m., they were called to the 2300 block of Lincoln Avenue near 23rd Street, the scene of another collision between two vehicles. One of the drivers fled the vehicle on foot after the crash and has not been found, Abetkov said.
And then five minutes later, police responded to Giant and Atlas roads, where a van drove off the roadway and crashed into a ravine. The driver was located and treated for minor injuries.
“It’s unknown at this point what caused that accident,” Abetkov said.
The flurry of car wrecks occurred shortly after a nonfatal shooting on Bissell Avenue about 6 p.m. that had already sucked up a lot of police resources, according to Abetkov.
