Richmond residents awakened by 11 gunshots Friday morning

KTVU (Ch. 2) offered a stunning report earlier this week: The Richmond Police Department seizes an average one gun per day.

That’s the figure Police Chief Chris Magnus reportedly gave to the news station Wednesday. While that number might seem disconcerting, police say getting the guns off the streets is partly why violent crime has been on the decline in Richmond.

“Having these guns recovered definitely makes me feel better,” Sgt. Eric Smith with the homicide unit told KTVU. “And we know they will not be used in another crime. So it is important to get them off the street.”

A firearm is used in 90 percent of the city’s homicides, Smith told the new station.
