Masked men steal more than 4 pounds of medical marijuana outside Richmond dispensary

Medical marijuana dispensaries generate small profit for city

A medical marijuana dispensary worker in Richmond, Calif. was robbed at gunpoint of more than 4 pounds of marijuana as he was leaving his workplace Sunday night, police said.

Not only are police trying to locate suspects in the large heist, they’re looking into why an employee of the Holistic Healing Collective at 15501 San Pablo Ave. had left the dispensary with so much marijuana, and at an unusual hour.

The robbery occurred at 10:15 p.m., well past the dispensary’s usual closing time of 8 p.m., Richmond police spokesperson Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

A dispensary employee in possession of more than 4 pounds of pot was walking to his car when he was approached by two men wearing ski masks, Abetkov said. One of the men produced a firearm and the victim was robbed of the marijuana, his cellphone and jewelry.

The suspects fled in a vehicle that police later located along with a second vehicle. While the initial vehicle fled the scene and hasn’t been found, a suspect that was tied to the second vehicle at the scene was arrested. He was allegedly in possession of one pound of marijuana.

“The victim came over and identified the packaging as being from the dispensary,” Abetkov said.

The suspect, who hasn’t been identified, was booked into jail for possession but not for the robbery, as the robbery suspects had been wearing masks and could not be identified by the victim.

The Richmond Police Department’s regulatory unit will also be investigating why the employee was leaving the dispensary with so much medicine.

“It is kind of odd to us,” Abetkov said, adding that the robbers were “obviously waiting, they knew the schedule, they knew the employee was coming out. What was [the employee] planning to do with all of that marijuana?”
