Richmond man pulls gun during alleged ice cream heist

A Richmond, Calif. man went down a rocky road Monday when he allegedly pulled a gun on store clerks who caught him shoplifting ice cream, a nutty plan that landed him in a cold jail cell.

Two employees of the Bayview Meat and Fish store at 1025 S. 47th St. saw the 28-year-old man stealing the ice cream about 6 p.m., police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said Tuesday.

In response, the man pulled out a gun, pointed it at them, and then apparently tried to pull back the gun’s slide and place a bullet in the chamber, Abetkov said. He ended up fleeing without firing the gun, but police officers spotted him on S. 45th Street and arrested him.

The suspect was booked into county jail in Martinez on suspicion of attempted robbery and brandishing a weapon, Abetkov said.

No injuries were reported.
