BART released a slick video Monday showing off its new connector to Oakland International Airport. Then below the video, the transit agency informed riders about a public hearing Thursday to determine how much riders would be willing pay to board the system.
BART says the rail line, set to open this fall, will reduce travel and wait times, triple capacity and add seven additional vehicles per hour. The connector will replace the existing AirBART buses.
While all of that sounds good, the price to ride it hasn’t been set.
“BART service to Oakland International Airport is expected to begin this Fall but just how much riders will pay for the 3.2 mile trip is still up in the air,” the transit agency posted on its blog Monday.
One proposal has the cost of a one-way trip at $6, double the $3 it costs for the AirBART bus. That’s for technology that a project manager in the BART video likened to a ski gondola. (In fairness, he later called the technology involved “pretty sophisticated.”)
Riders will have a chance to sound off on fare proposals at the BART board of directors meeting Thursday. The board will officially set the fare June 12.
