23rd Street fight turns fatal

Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects involved in a deadly crash on Richmond Parkway last week that was reportedly the result of an illegal street race.

A woman driving a green Ford Mustang at high speeds north on Garrard Boulevard past West Macdonald Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday was killed when she lost control of her vehicle and collided with a utility pole.

The crash briefly knocked out power for hundreds of homes and businesses.

KTVU Channel 2 interviewed a neighbor after the crash who said that area of Richmond Parkway often hosts illegal street racing. Here was the anonymous neighbor’s chilling account.

“I was watching the Clippers game when all of a sudden there was a loud boom – a crash – and then a big flash outside the window,” he told KTVU. “There were people screaming and running…We came outside and there were all these muscle-type cars parked in the street.”

The neighbor said an extremely distraught man was standing next to the crumpled car yelling – “Help, help. I’m sorry babe. I didn’t mean it.”

Most of the cars had driven off by the time police arrived, police said.

Below is a YouTube video posted about a year ago showing a broad daylight street race on the parkway. One of the comments below the video challenged a driver to a rematch.

Police apparently aren’t letting those responsible for Tuesday’s fatal crash go unpunished. They publicly announced their intention to find out who was responsible for the illegal race and fatal crash on the department’s Facebook page on Sunday.
