Richmond: Driver shot and killed on Interstate Highway 580

23rd Street fight turns fatal

A driver was killed following a shooting on Interstate Highway 580 in Richmond Saturday afternoon, police said.

The homicide, reported about 12:40 p.m., shut down all eastbound lanes for the investigation. The lanes have since been reopened.

Witnesses described seeing shots fired from a vehicle into a blue Ford SUV in the eastbound lanes near Regatta Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.

The SUV crashed in the center divider and overturned. When police approached the vehicle, they found the driver deceased. He had suffered at least one gunshot wound, Wilkenfeld said. The man’s identity has not been released.

RPD is investigating the homicide.

“We are asking the public, anybody who may have been traveling about that time, if they saw anything to please give us a call,” police Lt. Andre Hill said.

Anyone with information is asked to call an RPD detective at (510) 621-1259.

Further details were not immediately available. A CHP helicopter H-32 has been assisting the Richmond Police Department during the investigation.
