The West County Times has a great story today about an annual reunion held last week for athletes who played for Richmond Union High and El Cerrito High when they were the area’s only two high schools.
The Newell’s Sports Luncheon was held Friday at the Salesian Boys & Girls Club. One of the famous attendees was 80-year-old Jim Landis, who after high school enjoyed a brilliant 11-year career in Major League Baseball that included five Gold Gloves.
Landis has “fond memories of his days playing on Richmond ball fields,” the Times reported.
“It was fun spending time with all your buddies. A lot of us guys ran around together.”
Other attendees, the Times said, included Ernie Broglio, a member of the 1951 El Cerrito High team who went on to play for the St. Louis Cardinals; Mike Farmer, a former NBA player; and Art Smrekar, a three-time gold medal water skier.
