The Point Richmond Farmers’ Market is not returning this summer because it reportedly failed to attract enough customers since opening in 2009.
Agricultural producers did not sell enough product in past years to want to come back this year, said Jessica Millender, a regional manager for the Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association (PCFMA), which operated the market.
“We aren’t able to have a market if our agricultural producers aren’t planning to come,” Millender said Tuesday. “There was support, just not enough.”
Despite the market‘s absence, Pt. Richmond might still have access to fresh local produce this summer. The PCFMA’s sister company, Fresh Approach, is meeting with the Pt. Richmond Neighborhood Council this week to discuss the possibility of adding a mobile farmers’ market to the neighborhood.
The mobile market is essentially a food truck selling produce sourced from farms located within 100 miles. Plans to add such a service in Pt. Richmond are “very preliminary,” said Lauren Salcido of Fresh Approach. The goal is to have one rolling through the neighborhood in late spring or early summer, Salcido said.
Fresh Approach’s mobile farmers markets already operate in some areas of Richmond and also San Pablo. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide fresh and healthy options to communities known as food deserts.
Despite the demise of the Pt. Richmond market, the Richmond Main Street Market, also operated by PCFMA, will be back this summer, Millender said. The market will run from May 7 through Nov. 12, every Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The downtown market “has a built-in customer-base because of the surrounding businesses,” Millender said.
“We are making more efforts to try and partner up with local organizations in order get more of a customer base at the market,” she added.
The effort is part of an ongoing revitalization effort downtown called the Richmond Main Street Initiative.
