The comedic musical Johnny Guitar is coming to Masquers Playhouse in Point Richmond starting March 28.For a month starting March 28, Masquers Playhouse in Point Richmond will stage the campy comedy Johnny Guitar, which was honored in 2004 as the best off-Broadway musical by the Outer Critics Circle.

The musical will be staged Thursdays through Sundays through Apr. 26 at 8 p.m. The admission is $22.

Johnny Guitar is a comedy based on the 1954 cult film starring Joan Crawford.  A critic once described the staged version as “a serious musical version of a western that just happens to be so overly dramatic and operatic that it’s funny.”

The musical is about sultry saloonkeeper Vienna’s dispute with town matriarch Emma, who lusts after Vienna’s lover, The Dancin’ Kid. After Vienna finds herself in a dispute with townspeople – particularly Emma – she calls for protection from a mysterious gunfighter and former lover named Johnny Guitar. While their love rekindles, the dispute between Vienna and Emma builds and eventually leads to an epic shootout between the women.
