UC Berkeley football fans can now rest their espressos on a slab of their team’s history at Richmond’s Catahoula Coffee Co.
The coffee shop on San Pablo Avenue just installed a recycled bleacher seat from the university’s Memorial Stadium, which underwent a major retrofit in 2010.
Catahoula Coffee purchased the plank from the Wooden Duck, a recycled wood furniture dealer, and is using it as a sitting bar in the shop’s front window.
Barista Steven Noble expects to see a lot more of the vintage wood popping up around the Bay Area.
In 2012, according to an article in Berkeleyside, Wooden Duck owner Eric Gellerman purchased the torn-out stadium bleachers before they were shipped off to Mexico and began making furniture out of the high-quality wood.
“There is quite a bit out there and a lot of people are getting their hands on it,” Noble said.
Catahoula Coffee bought the wood in order to “support and be a part of a Bay Area institution,” Noble said.
“A lot of our business is based on community,” he said. “We want to support our local artists, give our customers a place to meet and talk and really be a community center. It’s something we think Richmond has been missing for some time.”
