Richmond police have arrested a local elementary school teacher on charges he sexually abused multiple students last year and are encouraging any other possible victims to come forward.

Ronald Guinto, 32, of Vallejo, was arrested in El Cerrito Wednesday morning on charges that he sexually abused multiple students while teaching at Making Waves Academy, a charter school at 4123 Lakeside Drive.

The arrest stemmed from reports in November that Guinto sexually abused at least two students between the ages of 11 and 13 at the school, Lt. Andre Hill said Thursday. He was booked on suspicion of lewd acts upon a child, forced oral copulation and assault with intent to commit sodomy, Hill said.

On Friday, Guinto pleaded not guilty to 27 counts involving sexual assault charges.

Richmond police hope releasing a booking photo of Guinto might lead to the discovery of more victims.

“The door is always open for potential victims to come forward,” Hill said.

Guinto was arrested as he arrived at his latest teaching job at El Cerrito’s Mira Vista Elementary School, where he was hired a month after police began investigating the sexual abuse case. Police obtained a warrant as soon as they learned Guinto got another job working with children, Hill said. However, the West County Times reported Thursday that the case raises questions about hiring practices at the West Contra Costa Unified School District.
