A 39-year-old man is dead, two young children are in critical condition, and a mother is facing DUI charges following a solo-vehicle crash in the Hilltop area Thursday night, police said.

The horrific accident occurred about 11:45 p.m. on San Pablo Avenue just north of Stanton Avenue, police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said Friday.

Few details have been released about the crash. Richmond fire officials had to extricate the vehicle’s four occupants, which included a 3-year-old and 5-year-old, Abetkov said. The 5-year-old wasn’t wearing a seat belt or any type of child restraint, Abetkov said.

A 39-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. His relationship to the female driver, who is in stable condition, was not immediately known, Abetkov said. The remaining occupants were airlifted to area hospitals.

The driver has not yet been identified and charges are pending. She is the mother of at least one of the children who were injured, Abetkov said.

The investigation is ongoing, Abetkov said. The police spokeswoman reminded drivers how important it is not to drink or drive, and also to make certain to abide by state law on child restraint in vehicles. If the child isn’t 8 years old or 80 pounds, he or she requires more than a seatbelt.

“It appeared that this child was not secured at all,” Abetkov said.
