The Richmond boys varsity soccer team defeated Mission San Jose (Fremont) in overtime, 1-0, on Wednesday night to advance to the second round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs.
Junior Addison Escobar scored the game-winning goal in overtime following a play that Coach Rene Siles called a “true team effort.” A steal and pass from left defender Marvin Parra helped to set up the game-winning score.
The seventh-seeded Oilers will next face second-seeded Monte Vista (Danville), which blanked 15th-seeded Antioch 5-0 in the first round Wednesday. Richmond will play at Monte Vista at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Despite a slow start against Mission San Jose, Siles said he was pleased with how his young team performed under pressure against a solid team.
“A lot of the kids were nervous – the large crowd, NCS playoffs,” Siles said. “Mentally I think it was difficult for the kids to adjust to the pressure, and it took us a long time to settle down.”
Siles heralded the play of junior holding midfielder Roberto Rios, who played in only his second game since suffering an injury in January.
“He did well,” Siles said. “He was able to adjust.”
The Oilers haven’t played Monte Vista this year but know it is a solid team with only three losses all season.
“Very good team, very well coached,” Siles said. “They’re a technical team, they have a couple of players that have I think scored more than 20 goals, so they have a very powerful offensive team. It’s a big challenge for us, but we will do our best.”
