Richmond police Chief Chris Magnus has warned residents about a series of robberies involving Craigslist.com transactions.

“The typical scenario: a victim is invited to exchange goods for cash at a location, and then the victim is robbed by one or more suspects,” the police chief said in a post on the Police Department’s Facebook page.

The chief also gave recommendations on how to safely navigate the Craigslist marketplace:

1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Meet in a public place to conduct the exchange, or at a police station. If they balk, they probably are not legitimate.

3. Do not meet in a secluded area. Highly populated areas are better.

4. Do not travel to a location with a large amount of cash
If someone or something looks suspicious, leave.

5. If you are threatened, give the subjects the property they are asking for.
