Extensive damage was sustained to a Richmond jail cell Wednesday afternoon after a female inmate who tried to hang herself damaged the sprinkler heads and flooded the cell, police said.

The unidentified woman, who had been arrested Tuesday on assault charges, apparently “rigged a blanket” to the ceiling sprinkler system in her cell at the Police Department’s jailhouse at 1701 Regatta Blvd., police said.

The sprinkler heads “broke and flooded the cell” at about 2:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said Thursday.

The inmate is currently in stable condition, Abetkov said.

Police Chief Chris Magnus called the damage “considerable.”  The cost of repairs is not yet known, and further information about the incident was not immediately available, Abetkov said.
