Chilling statement from planning commissioner

What a planning commissioner declared about Richmond last month was downright cold.

“We need more ice cream in town,” Ben Choi, vice chair of the planning commission, brazenly stated at a planning commission hearing.

The remark came as the commission approved the use of space at 3051 Cutting Blvd., near S 31st St., for a shop serving both sandwiches and ice cream.

The store, which will fill a vacant space next to a fish & chips eatery, is slated to be called, Big Bites Sandwich Shop.

While planning commissioners have yet to try the shop’s ice cream, early indicators are positive. After all, the permit’s applicant is named Cedric Sweet.

“I like the place and the name,” Commissioner Roberto Reyes agreed.

Readers are encouraged to chime in on whether, as Choi suggests, there is a shortage of ice cream retailers in Richmond.
